熟悉 vs 认识:
1. 熟悉 is a verb. 认识 can be a verb or a noun.
2. When they are both verbs, 熟悉 is "be familiar with" or "know well", while 认识 is "to recognize". For example, if it's a person, when you use 认识 you mean when you see the person you will recognize his face; when you use 熟悉, you mean you do not only recognize the person, you probably also know the person well enough to know his habits, age, what he does for work, etc.
3. 熟悉 and 认识 are both verbs indicating mental activities (in Chinese: 心理动词). Some verbs indicating mental activities can be modified by adverbs of degree. 熟悉 can be modified by adverbs of degree, e.g. 很熟悉，不太熟悉, while 认识 is rarely modified by such adverbs.
