The original meaning of 加 is "make a false report; slander", based on information from "Shuowen Jiezi" (in Chinese:《说文解字》). "Shuowen Jiezi" is the first ancient Chinese character dictionary that analyzes the structure of the characters and the rationale behind them.
加 is made up of two parts: left side is 力 (physical strength), and the right side is 口 (mouth). A mouth that is strong or powerful can make false reports.
Throughout the history, 加 has long lost its original meaning. In modern Chinese, it no longer has the meaning of "slander". Hope this short explanation is helpful!
