The use of "系" (xì) with the meaning "是" (shì), as in "是" (shì), has largely become obsolete in contemporary Chinese. This usage was more common in classical Chinese or earlier forms of the language. 系 (xì) can mean "to be" or "to have" only in ancient Chinese. It's not commonly used in this way in modern Chinese.
