In this post, we discuss the uses of 一…就…, an important structure composed of two correlative adverbs 一 and 就. This structure can be used to indicate successive relation or conditional relation.

1. 一…就… indicates that two events happen closely one after the other. The predicates connected by the two adverbs are verbs. The two adverbs have to be put after the subject and before the predicate. For example:
Example 1. 我一回家,就睡觉了。 [phr] As soon as I went home, I went to sleep.
Example 2. 你一进门,我就看见你了。 [phr] The very moment you came in, I saw you.

2. 一…就… indicates that under the condition given, a result stated will surely come into being. The two adverbs have to be put after the subject and before the predicate. For example:
Example 3. 我一吃橘子,就胃痛。 [phr] Whenever I eat oranges my stomach aches.
