One would use 烟雾 (yānwù) when describing the air pollution in a city. For example, "这个城市的烟雾 (yānwù) 很严重,空气质量很差" (zhè gè chéngshì de yānwù hěn yánzhòng, kōngqì zhìliàng hěn chà - The smog in this city is very severe, and the air quality is very poor). Another example could be "由于烟雾 (yānwù) 密集,能见度很低,驾驶很危险" (yóuyú yānwù mìjí, néngjiàndù hěn dī, jiàshǐ hěn wēixiǎn - Due to the dense smog, visibility is low and driving is dangerous). In both cases, 烟雾 (yānwù) refers to the thick, hazy air caused by pollution or smoke.
