之前 vs 以前

之前 can refer to physical locations, meaning "before" or "in front of". 以前 cannot be used in this way. For example:
E.g. 他们站在国旗之前宣誓。 Standing before the national flag, they took the oath.

What other words can I use to express the same meaning as 之前 (zhīqián)?
