一下子 emphasises that an action or a state changes very fast. Its meaning is different from this adverb:
忽然 (忽然) [hu1 ran2] , (adv) suddenly
The emphasis of 忽然 is on the fact that the change is very “unexpected”. In most cases we cannot replace one with the other without changing the meaning of the sentence.

一下子 can be used on something that has happened . It cannot be used on something that is going to happen at the time of speaking. 一下子 can be used on something that is beyond one’s control, but it cannot be used on something that can be decided/controlled. For example:
