继母 (jìmǔ) is used to refer to a step mother, usually in contrast to a biological mother (生母 shēngmǔ). For example, one might say: "我的继母很和蔼，但是我的生母更加关心我" (wǒ de jìmǔ hěn hé'ǎi, dànshì wǒ de shēngmǔ gèngjiā guānxīn wǒ - My step mother is very kind, but my biological mother is even more caring).
