引 and 引起 can both mean "to cause". What is their difference?
1. 引, to cause a reaction among people, might be hate, or love, etc. E.g. 引得大家发笑,引人注意, etc.
2. 引起, to cause, usually an event/phenomenon/incident/action causes another event/phenomenon/incident/action to happen, E.g:
饮食不合理有时会引起高血压。 Sometimes an unreasonable diet may produce hypertension.
那位明星的露面总是能引起轰动。 The appearance of that pop star always creates a sensation.
Here "an unreasonable diet" or "the appearance of that pop star" are phenomenon and incident respectively. They cause "hypertension" and "a sensation", which are some other phenomenon and action.
