端午节 (duānwǔjié), also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It is a time to commemorate the ancient Chinese poet and minister Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against government corruption.
One of the main traditions of 端午节 is the dragon boat race (龙舟赛 lóngzhōusài), where teams of rowers race in long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. This is believed to symbolize the villagers' attempt to rescue Qu Yuan from the river.
Another important aspect of the festival is the consumption of zongzi (粽子), a traditional sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. These are often filled with different ingredients such as pork, beans, or dates, and are eaten as a symbol of the villagers' attempts to feed Qu Yuan's spirit in the afterlife.
