Forgive me for this long question. What is the connotation of this word? For example, if someone were grieving the loss of a loved one, would it be inappropriate to use this word to describe them (他好可怜 or 我很可怜他)or their situation (他的情况很可怜)?

I ask this because people don’t usually like to be pitied in English, but would much prefer to have people “feel for them” or to “sympathize with them.” Is there something similar in Chinese?
