加 (jiā) is used to express the concept of "adding" or "increasing" something. For example, 加 (jiā) can be used to express the idea of "adding" a certain amount of money to a total, as in "我们需要再加五百元才能支付这个账单 (Wǒmen xūyào zài jiā wǔbǎi yuán cái néng zhīfù zhè gè zhàngdān.)". In English, it means "We need to add another five hundred yuan before we could afford to pay this bill."
It can also be used to express the idea of "increasing" the amount of something, as in "我们需要加把劲儿。(Wǒmen xūyào jiā bǎ jìnr)", meaning "Let's increase try a little harder."

The original meaning of 加, according to Shuowen Jiezi, is "to make untrue statements". There are six methods of forming Chinese characters, and the character 加 is what we call an associative compound Chinese character (in Chinese: 会意字). 加 = 力 (physical strength) + 口 (mouth). One's mouth with strength makes untrue statements.
Note that the original meaning of 加 has disappeared throughout history. In modern Chinese, 加 no longer has the meaning "to make untrue statements".
