地方 VS 地点

地方 can be pronounced as "dìfang" or "dì fāng". Different pronunciations come with different meanings:
- dì fang [n] place; spot; room, space; part, respect
- dì fāng [n] local government (as opposed to the central government)

1. When compare 地方 with 地点, the only meaning we need to zoom in onto is "place, spot". This meaning is similar to 地点 (place, site, venue, location). Please note that 地点 does not share those other meanings of 地方.

2. When we say 地点, it is a pinpointed place for a certain activity or event -- site, venue or location. Here are some examples. Note that we usually choose to use or omit 的 before 地点, when we specify what the venue or site is for:
交货地点 trade) place of delivery
工作地点 workplace
施工地点 construction site, job location
开会的地点在三楼会议室。 The venue of the meeting is the conference room on the third floor.

3. When we say 地方, it is way more general than 地点. 地方 is not specified to the venue of activities or events. It can refer to a large place or a small spot. Examples:
这个地方和我家乡一样漂亮。 This place is as beautiful as my hometown.
我这个地方有点痒痒。 I feel itchy at this spot.
