排列 vs 排序

1. 排列 is about putting things in order, so that it does not look chaotic or messy. This can be done according to different criteria or standards (color, shape, time, year, etc.), which can be introduced by 按 or 根据, (both prepositions) -- 按...排列, 根据...排列. Sometimes, we simply use 排列 without mentioning what standard or criteria are used. Examples:
我喜欢把东西分类,然后按一定顺序排列。 [phr] I like to sort things and then put them in a certain order.
请把这些盒子按照从大到小的顺序排列。 [phr] Please line up these boxes from the largest to the smallest.
排列整齐 [phr] to arrange in order, to put in order
根据年代排列 [phr] to arrange in chronological order
把书和杂志排列在书架上 [phr] to arrange books and magazines on the bookshelf

2. Think of 排序 as a short form of 排列顺序 (to arrange in a sequence). When we use 排序 we emphasize on what comes first, what comes next. You follow from number 1 to 10, or A to Z.
