"上下" is often used to describe the relative superiority and inferiority of two people or things. For example, one might say "他们的能力上下差不多" (tāmen de nénglì shàngxià chàbuduō) meaning "Their abilities are roughly equal". It can also be used to indicate a rough number, such as "我们大概有上下十个人" (wǒmen dàgài yǒu shàngxià shí gè rén) meaning "We have roughly ten people".
