值 (zhí) can be used to express that something is worth something, or that something is deserving of something. For example, 他的努力值得赞赏 (tā de nǔlì zhídé zànshǎng ) - His efforts are worth praising. It can also be used to express that something is happening to someone, or that someone is on duty. For example, 今天我值班 (jīntiān wǒ zhíbān) - I'm on duty today.

Yes, 值 (zhí) can be used as a verb.
When used as a verb, we could say: 这双鞋子值多少钱? How much is this pair of shoes worth?
