逝世 (shìshì) is commonly used to refer to someone's death, usually in a more formal context. For example, one might say 他的父亲昨天逝世了 (tā de fùqin zuótiān shìshì le; His father passed away yesterday). It is also used to refer to the death of a pet, for example 小狗昨天逝世了 (xiǎogǒu zuótiān shìshì le; The puppy passed away yesterday). It is not used to refer to the death of an animal in the wild, for which the word 死亡 (sǐwáng) is more commonly used.
