向往 (xiàngwǎng) is used in modern Chinese to express a strong desire for something, usually something that is out of reach. It is often used to describe a longing for a better life, a better job, or a better place to live. For example, someone might say 他一直向往着去美国留学 (tā yīzhí xiàngwǎngzhe qù měiguó liúxué, He has always yearned to study in the United States). It can also be used to express a strong attraction to something, such as a person or a place. For example, someone might say 他向往着那个城市的美景 (tā xiàngwǎngzhe nàgè chéngshì de měijǐng, He is attracted to the beauty of that city).
