When 乘坐, 乘 and 坐 mean "to travel or go by (a means of transportation)", here are some of the differences that they have:

1. From most formal to least formal, the ranking is: 乘坐 -> 乘 -> 坐
You often see 乘坐 and 乘 in formal language; while in informal contexts, 坐 is commonly used.
Compare these 2 examples:
- 感谢您乘坐地铁出行。 [phr] Many thanks for traveling by subway.
- 我上个星期坐火车去青岛了。[phr] I went to Qingdao by train last week.
2. 乘坐 cannot be followed by a monosyllabic noun, while 乘 and 坐 do not have this limitation. All three can be followed by duo-syllablic nouns.
Example: we can say 乘船, 坐船, but we cannot say *乘坐船
