白努力 (bái nǔlì) is used to describe a situation in which someone has worked hard but has not achieved anything in return. For example, one might say: "他花了很多时间和精力，但是白努力了，没有任何收获。" (Tā huāle hěn duō shíjiān hé jīnglì, dànshì bái nǔlì le, méiyǒu rènhé shōuhuò.) which translates to "He spent a lot of time and energy, but it was all for nothing, he got nothing in return."
