而是 (érshì) is used to express the idea of "rather, but that" in a sentence. For example, 他不是去上学，而是去参加活动 (tā bùshì qù shàngxué, érshì qù cānjiā huódòng) which means "He didn't go to school, but rather went to participate in an activity".
