"之所以" (zhī suǒ yǐ) is a Chinese phrase that can be used to express cause and effect. It literally translates to "the reason why" and is used to explain why something happened or why something is the way it is. For example, "他之所以没有及时到达,是因为他的车坏了" (tā zhī suǒ yǐ méi yǒu jí shí dào dá, shì yīn wèi tā de chē huài le) which translates to "The reason why he didn't arrive on time is because his car broke down".

之所以 (zhī suǒ yǐ) is used to express the reason why something is the case. It is often used in the form of a question, such as 为什么 (wèi shén me) "why?". For example, 为什么他不来?他之所以不来是因为他有事 (wèi shén me tā bù lái? tā zhī suǒ yǐ bù lái shì yīn wèi tā yǒu shì) "Why isn't he coming? The reason why he isn't coming is because he has something to do".
