The difference between 帽子 (màozi) and 帽 (mào) is that 帽子 refers generally to any headgear or headwear, while 帽 can be used to form other nouns or phrases to refer to a specific type of headgear, e.g. baseball cap - 棒球帽. 帽 also means "cap-like cove". e.g. 笔帽 (pen cap).
