The difference between 编号 (biānhào) and 号码 (hàomǎ) is that 编号 (biānhào) usually refers to a specific identification or serial number, while 号码 (hàomǎ) is more commonly used to refer to a general number - this could be any number, for instance, the size of a shirt, or someone's telephone number.

In the situation where a group of people are queueing up to receive services at a bank, for instance, they get a number upon arrival at the bank and sit down and wait for their number to be called, 号码 (號碼) is a better word.
