建国门 (jiànguó mén) is a place in Beijing, located at the south end of Chang'an Avenue. It is historically significant as it was the site of the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. During the ceremony, Mao Zedong declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China and raised the first five-starred red flag of the nation. Since then, the area has become a symbol of the nation's founding and a popular tourist destination.
