Using 玩意儿 is grammatically correct in this context. But the following two questions have different tones:
E.g.1 这是什么 ？
E.g.2 这是什么玩意儿？
The 1st example does not have a specific tone. It may be used in spoken or written Chinese.
The 2nd example is very colloquial and informal. In some contexts, using 玩意儿 indicates a slightly derogatory meaning, as if the speaker thinks low of the object, or think the object is not that useful.
