名 is used to refer to someone's identity (including profession) or position. The tone of 名 is quite formal and serious. We may say: 一名学生 (a student)、一名老师 (a teacher)、一名医生 (a doctor)、一名病人 (a patient).
However, we cannot use 名 to indicate social relations among people, e.g. 朋友 (friend)，etc. We need to adopt other measure words. 名 is often compared with other measure words for persons, such as 位, 个, ... If you are interested, please also check out 位 (wei4) in our dictionary.
