由于 is generally used in the first clause of a complex sentence to indicate the cause, and it is more often used in written Chinese.
It can be either used alone (E.g.1) or used together with another conjunction, such as 因此 or 所以 (E.g. 2a&2b) to form structures like these: 由于…，因此…。or 由于…，所以…。
E.g.1 由于下雪，会议改期了。 [phr] Because it is snowing, the date for the meeting has been changed.
E.g.2a 由于他工作认真，因此得到了大家的信任。 [phr] Because he works with a serious attitude, he has won everybody's trust.
E.g.2b 由于他工作认真，所以得到了大家的信任。 [phr] Because he works with a serious attitude, he has won everybody's trust.

In some cases 由于 can be omitted (E.g.2c).
E.g.2c 他工作认真，因此/所以得到了大家的信任。 [phr] Because he works with a serious attitude, he has won everybody's trust.

It can also be used in the second clause which indicates the cause (E.g.3). The sentence is formed this way to specially explain the reason or the cause:
E.g.3 会议改期了，这主要是由于下雪了。 [phr] The date for the meeting has been changed, and it is mainly because it’s snowing.

由于 vs 既然:

1. 由于 is used in formal Chinese to indicate reason and is paired with 所以, 因此 or 因而 to be followed by the objective result.

2. 既然 is followed by a reality that is known to both the speaker and the listener. 既然 is paired with 那 or 就, and what follows is the speaker's subjective opinion or deduction
3. For instance, in the following sentence we can only use 既然:
既然要我去，就是相信我。Since they ask me to go, it means they trust me.
