Hi, thank you for your input! 那 has three entries in our dictionary.
- nà [pro] that (used in place of sth or sb further away in distance or time)
- nà [pro] that (refer to a person or thing further away in distance or time)
- nà [conj] then, in that case
The first two entries are both pronouns, but they are entered as two separate entries because they are used in different ways:
- When 那 is used in place of something or someone further away in distance or time, it can be used as a subject all by itself in a sentence. e.g. 那是英文杂志。 r/- [phr] That's an English magazine.
- When 那 is used to refer to something or someone further away in distance or time, 那 is followed by measure words and nouns, not independently, e.g. 那天 (that day),那本书 (that book)
The third entry is a conjunction, meaning "then, in that case", quite different from when 那 is used as a pronoun.
