岸 (àn) is used to refer to a bank, coast, or shore. For example, you could say "我们在河岸上散步" (wǒmen zài hé àn shàng sànbù) which means "We are taking a walk by the riverbank". It can also be used to refer to the edge of a body of water, such as a lake or sea. For example, you could say "我们在海岸上游泳" (wǒmen zài hǎi àn shàng yóuyǒng) which means "We are swimming at the seashore".

岸 (àn) is used to describe a physical boundary, such as the bank of a river or the coast of an ocean. It is not used to describe a figurative boundary. Other Chinese words that can be used to describe a figurative boundary include 界 (jiè) and 线 (xiàn).
