列 (liè) is used when you want to put something in order, list, or set out. For example, you can use 列 to say "list the items" or "rank the items". And when using 列, you are either typing it out on a computer, or writing it down using pen and paper.
In contrast, 写 (xiě) is used only when you want to write something down, and it can be just one word or one letter; it can also be a list of items.
