The difference between 胜任 (shèng rèn) and 合格 (hégé) is that 胜任 implies a higher level of competency than 合格. 胜任 implies that the person is able to take charge of something and do it well, while 合格 implies that the person is able to take charge of something but may not necessarily do it well.
