This is correct but it’s also the “bodhi tree” of Buddhism and Hinduism which is probably the most likely context to encounter the Chinese term. Other names: Ficus religiosa, sacred fig, peepul tree, peepal tree, pipala tree, ashvattha tree. Pipul. I think the variations in the spelling of “peepul” come from different languages or different English spellings over a long time with lack of standardization. Also “bo tree” (which even seems to be in my iPhones built in dictionary)
