碰见 (pèngjiàn) is a verb that means "to come across (a person) unexpectedly, to run into (a person)". For example, you can say "我昨天碰见了一个老朋友" (wǒ zuótiān pèngjiàn le yīgè lǎo péngyou), which means "I ran into an old friend yesterday".

Yes, they are similar. Note that 碰见 is usually followed by a person, while 遇到 can be followed by a person or a situation (such as 挫折, 烦恼, 挑战, 困难
, 难题, 情况, 交通堵塞, etc.). Check out the newly added examples on trainchinese.com, or wait to see them in the future updates of our trainchinese dictionary mobile app! :)
