继续 vs 延续

延续 emphasizes the continuation of a state into the future, to prolong the state.
E.g.
不能让这种状况延续下去。 [phr] We can't allow this condition to continue.
延续生命 [phr] to prolong life

继续 emphasizes the connection of actions, allowing a short period of pause inbetween.
请大家休息一会儿，十分钟后继续上课。 [phr] Please take a break, everyone. The class will resume in ten minutes.
他顿了一下，然后继续讲下去。 [phr] He paused and then continued to talk.

继续 is used to connect on action with another one. 持续 indicates the sustaining of a state.

1-休息过后，我们继续工作。After the break, we went back to work. We cannot use 持续 in this sentence.
2-我们已经持续工作了五个小时了。We have been working continuously for five years. We cannot use 继续 in this sentence.
