搬 versus 挪: 搬 and 挪 are both verbs. How are they different?
1. 搬 has different meanings, as listed below. Note that 挪 is similar to 搬 in only the first meaning - 1a. 挪 doesn't have the other three meanings.
1a. to carry, to haul, to transport, to move, e.g. 桌子太重了,我帮你一起搬吧。 The table is too heavy. I will help you carry that.
1b. to change residence, e.g. 后来他搬到了台湾。 He moved to Taiwan later.
1c. to adapt and show, e.g. 搬上银幕 to adapt (a novel, a play) for the screen, to make a film (of a play or novel)
1d. to apply indiscriminately, e.g. 生搬硬套 to copy and apply mechanically
2. 挪 has different meanings too, as listed below. Note that 2a is similar to 1a, and 搬 does not have the other 2 meanings of 挪
2a. to move, to shift, e.g. 这张桌子太笨重了,挪动起来十分不方便。 This desk is too heavy. It is not convenient to move it.
2b. to shift (a date), e.g. 咱们把会议的日期挪到下周三吧。Let's move the date of the meeting to next Wednesday.
2c. to misappropriate, e.g. 挪用 [v] divert (funds), embezzle
3. Now, let's take a look at 搬 (1a) and 挪 (1b).
The first difference between 搬 (1a) and 挪 (1b) is that 搬 is an action of lifting an object off of a surface (floor, ground...) and move it elsewhere. 挪 can be used to refer to the same, but can also generally refer to moving or shifting position. When 挪 is used, the object is not necessarily lifted off of a surface - 挪 can be achieved by dragging an object, for instance.
The other difference is that 挪 (1b) can be used as an intransitive verb referring to the action of an animate subject (a living being, such as person, an animal). 搬 does not have this usage. For example, 往前挪动几步 move forward a few steps. - in this example, 搬 cannot replace 挪.

搬 (bān) is a verb and is used to indicate the action of carrying, hauling, transporting, moving, changing residence, adapting and showing, or applying indiscriminately. It is usually used in the form of 搬 (bān) + object, for example: 搬家 (bān jiā) meaning "to move house, to move to a different residence)".
