资助 vs 赞助

资助 is to financially support and aid by giving cash;

赞助 is also "to financially support" in most cases, but in some cases if it's supporting by donating items, supplies, etc. instead of donating cash, we use 赞助.

Fro example, a charity hosts an event and there will be corporate sponsors. Some of them write cheques or do e transfer moeny - here we can use 资助; others support by paying for food, providing event venue, or donating an auction item, in which case 赞助 is a better word.
