The idiom "下台阶" (xià táijiē) means “have one more or less graceful way to back out of an embarrassing situation”. In everyday life, we can use this idiom as it is, or break it apart based on the context to form structures such as 给...台阶下 (to give ... a graceful way to help them back out of an embarrassing situation). For example, you can say: 我故意没给他台阶下。I deliberately did not let him back out of the embarrassing situation.
