In this post, we discuss these two words: 各 and 每. They can both be a pronoun or an adverb. What differences do they have?

1. 每 refers to anyone or anything in a certain group or range. Its emphasis is on the whole, meaning that there is no exception, that there is no one or nothing that is not like this. 每 often appears with 都 in the same sentence;各, on the other hand, refers to the different individuals in a certain group or range. Its emphasis is on the individuality.
For example, the 每 and 各 below are interchangeable. They indicate “every and each”.
每年 ([pro] every year; each year; yearly) —> 各年
每个地方 [nphr] every place —> 各个地方
每个民族都有自己的风俗。 [phr] Every nation has its own customs. —> 各个民族……。
这家公司的影响力遍及全球各个角落。 [phr] The influence of this company has reached every corner of the earth. —> ……全球每个角落。
政府制定政策时应该考虑社会各个阶层的共同利益。 [phr] The government should take the interests of all social strata into account when making policy. —>⋯⋯每个阶级的共同利益。

2. When we want to express the meaning “without any exception”, only 每 can be used. In the examples below, 每 cannot be replaced by 各.
Example:
我每天七点起床。 [phr] Every day I get up at seven o'clock.

3. When we emphasize the differences among individuals, we only use 各. In the sentence below, 各 cannot be replaced by 每.
Example:
世界各大银行抢滩上海。 [phr] Major international banks are scrambling for the Shanghai Market.

4. When 每 and 各 are used as an adverb before a verb. But they mean different things and they are not interchangeable. 每 indicates “every, every time”. 各 means “each (adverbially)” or “respectively”.
Examples:
每逢佳节倍思亲。 [phr] I miss my family all the more on every festival day.
他每写一个字都要停下来想一想。(phr) Every time he finishes writing a character, he will stop and think.
萝卜青菜,各有所爱。 [phr] Every man has h
