In this post, we discuss the differences between two adverbs: 又 and 再.
又 indicates that after the occurrence of an action or event, another action or event of the same kind occurred. It is usually used in the past tense with particle 了. For example,
E.g. 我没有考好,爸爸又发火了。 [phr] I failed again in the exam and my father lost temper again.
再 is used to add on a same action or event. It has the meaning of “again” too but it is used on a future action or event. For example,
E.g. 请再写一遍 [phr] Please write one more time.

In this post, we compare 再 and 再次.

再 adverb
Meaning 1: In addition: E.g.1a 院子里种着花,再就是树。 [phr] In the yard are planted flowers and also trees
Meaning 2: then, only then: E.g. 1b 看完电影再走吧。 [phr] Leave after finishing watching the movie./ Let's go after finishing watching the movie.
Meaning 3: again, once more; E.g.1c 请再念一遍。 [phr] Please read it again.
Meaning 4: (before adjectives) more E.g.1d 再便宜一点儿吧! [phr] Can you make it a little cheaper?
Meaning 5: if ... continues, even if ... continues: E.g.1e 你再胡闹,我揍你。 [phr] If you mess around again, I will beat you up.

再次 adverb
Meaning: once more, a second time, once again
E.g.2a 那天你再次为我悄悄流下泪。 [phr] (lyrics) That day, you shed tears for me once again.
E.g.2b 他再次踏上了非洲的土地。 [phr] He set foot on African soil again
E.g.2c 欢迎您再次乘坐北京出租车。 [phr] You are welcome to take a Beijing taxi again.

Differences:
1. 再次 is generally of a higher register. It is more formal, the language level is higher than 再. You can detect it in the degree of difficulty of the example sentences.
2. 再次 does not have the Meanings 1, 2, 4 and 5 of 再. Therefore, in Examples 1a, 1b, 1d, 1e, we cannot use 再次 to replace 再.
3. In terms of 再 Meaning 3 and 再次, even though they look similar, they are used differently. 再 is only used before actions/ events that haven't happened yet, in other words, something in the future (please see Examples 1c); 再次 can be used both in the describing actions/events that happened in the past (Examples 2a, 2b) and those which will happen in the future (2c).
