必须 (bìxū) and 要 (yào) are different in these ways:

必须 means "must, have to". It indicates a strong obligation.
E.g. 我必须写完作业。Wǒ bìxū xiě wán zuòyè. I must finish my homework. (No choice, must do it.)

要 means "want to; will; should" depending on context. It's weaker.
E.g. 我今天要写作业。Wǒ jīntiān yào xiě zuòyè. I’m going to do homework today. (Statement of intent or plan.)
