把 is one of the many Chinese words which have dozens of meanings. When it is used as a measure word, it's usually used before objects with handles, but exceptions do exist. Other than the ones we listed in the examples here, we can also use 把 before the following objects (Pinyin and English translations are listed in parentheses):

尺(chi3, ruler),壶(pot, kettle, hu2),梳子(shu1zi5, comb),伞(san3, umbrella),扇子(shan4zi5, fan),牙刷(ya2shua1, toothbrush),钥匙(yao4shi5, key),锁(suo3, lock)

Among the nouns above, 尺, 钥匙 and 锁 do not have handles.
Please note that 把 can also be used (in some dialects in north China) as a measure word for people of special skills. For information, please check the other entry of 把 (m.) in our dictionary.
