这么 is a demonstrative pronoun. It doesn’t necessarily always mean “so…” in English indicating a high degree. Sometimes it is used to replace a type of measurement.
E.g. 1 我们家这么干净! [phr] Our home is so clean!
E.g. 2 给我一点儿透明胶带,这么长就够了。 [phr] Give me some transparent duct tape. This long is enough.
For example, in E.g. 1, 这么 is used to express a high degree. In E.g. 2, 这么 replaces the length of the duct tape the speaker needs.
In short, the meaning of 这么 depends on the context.

In this post, we discuss the differences of two similar pronouns 这么 and 这样.

1. When used to point out the manner of an action, both 这么 and 这样 can be used before a verb. They are interchangeable in the sentences below:
E.g. 他这么(or 这样) 做,只因他太爱她了。 [phr] He did so only because he loved her very much.
E.g. 我不明白他这样 (or 这么) 做的目的。 [phr] I don't understand why he did so.

2. When used to indicate the degree, both 这么 and 这样 can be used before an adjective or a verb indicating mental activities (喜欢,爱,讨厌…). They are interchangeable in the sentences below:
E.g. 天这样 (or 这么) 冷,我的鼻涕都冻出来了。 [phr] The weather is so cold that my nasal mucus is dripping from my nose from the coldness.
E.g. 我一直不知道原来你这么 (or 这样) 爱我。 [phr] I didn't know all along that you loved me this much.

3. When used to take the place of a situation or condition, only 这样 can be used. We cannot use 这么 to replace 这样 in the the sentences below:
E.g. 你带了伞,怎么还淋成这样? [phr] You have brought an umbrella. How did you get so drenched from the rain?
E.g. 看你这样好心疼。 [phr] I see that you are like this and I feel heartbroken for you.

4. When used to point out the property or quality of someone or something, 这样 and 这么 can both be used before a noun but with different formats. Below three possible formats are listed with examples:
这样 的 Noun: E.g. 我们家还有一只这样的狗。 [phr] In our house there is also such a dog.
这样 一 Measure word Noun E.g.我们家还有这样一只狗。
这么 一 Measure word Noun E.g. 我们家还有这么一只狗。

What is the difference between 这么 and 那么?

They are both demonstrative pronouns, and their meanings, functions, and positions in a sentence are basically the same.
Their difference lies in: 这么 refers to a person or an object that is relatively close (E.g. 1), while 那么 refers to a person or an object that is relatively far (E.g.2). This “distance” is not only about space. It can also be about time (E.g.3).
E.g. 1 给我一点儿透明胶带,这么长就够了。 [phr] Give me some transparent duct tape. This long is enough.
E.g. 2 我没有门口那个人那么高。 [phr] I am not as tall as that person at the door.
E.g. 3. 去年那么做可以,但是今年不行了,你就按我刚刚说的这么做,绝对没问题。 [phr] Last year it was okay to do it that way, but this year it won't work. Just do as I just said, you will have absolutely no problem.

In some sentences, both 这么 那么 can be used, and it makes no difference. The reason could be, 1) the distance is difficult to determine, or 2) 这么/那么 indicates a high degree with a exclamatory tone.
E.g. 4 你的房间总是这么/那么规整! [phr] Your room is always neat and clean!
