I signed in on my ipad account and had no problems but when I downloaded the app on my iphone and signed in, it says the email address is already being used. 

Do I need to use a different email address on each device??

Please use the same user name and password on all devices and also on the website.

Do not try to register again (then you will see that the email is already in use...)
