All my lists disappeared from the desktop version and hence also from the web version (they are still on my phone as I haven't refreshed it yet). Might it be because of the subscription upgrade? How can I get them back?

The desktop app is still in beta - so am not sure if you by accident hit a problem there, we will have a look at it.  But fortunately on the website all lists are available.
Just to make sure the desktop does not delete anything - do NOT "Update Cards" and delete the desktop app, then re-install the app.
